Try These 4 Top Burgers In Chicago

Uncle Alton here. When I am not helping people choose the perfect Outdoor Electric Grill (like the convenient and powerful The Weber Q 140), I like to travel and eat.

Preferably both at the same time. ;)

One of my very favorite places to do both is Chicago.

Here is a short report one some excellent grub I discovered on a recent trip.

Enjoy.

Chicago is known today as the Windy City.

But it wasn’t too many years ago that it was known as the “Slaughter House of the World” and the stockyards stood proudly beside the lake.

This dedication to all things meaty and delicious is expressed today in these four delicious hamburgers. Some of them are from fancy upscale restaurants — some are from downtown joint. All of them are just exactly what a hamburger should be — big, meaty, juicy and absolutely delicious.

And not a one of them has a “Mc” before their name.

In no particular order:

1. The Top Sirloin Burger at Prairie Grass Cafe.

Recently picked as the #1 burger in Chicago by Jeff Ruby in Chicago Magazine, this charbroiled hunk of prime beef is simply amazing. After the beef is grilled to perfection, a generous helping of Amish Blue Cheese is melted on top and a couple of slices of tomatoes and onions are thrown on the grill. The entire creation is a thing of beauty and absolutely delicious.

Prairie Grass Cafe is at 601 Skokie Blvd in Northbrook. The burger is $15 and worth every penny.

2. Kuma Burger at Kuma’s Corner

Perhaps the most famous “burger joint” in Chicago, Kuma’s Corner does not disappoint despite the buildup. You can expect a very long wait and blaring punk music — but, believe me, the burger is worth it. The menu has started to include many creative additions lately, but the Kuma Burger is still tops. Ten ounces, with cheddar cheese, applewood-smoked bacon and a sunny-side-up egg on a thick roll is worth even the occassional split eardrum.

Kuma’s Corner is at 2900 W. Belmont Ave and the protein monster is $10.

3. The Deluxe Beefburger at Top Notch Burgers

This little dingy diner in Beverly is not a place you might ever discover by accident. But the Beefburgers are well worth a special trip. As the name implies the beef is the star here and the 1/2 pounder is rich, juicy… and only $7.25.

4. Wagyu Beef Burger at Yoshi’s Cafe

After Top Notch maybe you want something a little more upscale and closer to downtown. I have just the place. Marbled wagyu beef makes a beauty of a pattie. And at 10 ounces there is plenty of this burger to enjoy. This is easily the thickest burger in Chicago. But it is tender and melt in your mouth delicious.

Yoshi’s Cafe is in Boystown at 3257 N. Halsted St and the Wagyu Beef Burger will set you back $18

Thank you, take care and enjoy your burgers.

3 More Killer Burgers — From Traditional To Totally Outrageous — You Should Not Miss On Your Next Trip To Chicago.

Uncle Alton here. When I am not giving people advice about which Outdoor Electric Grills to buy, or where to get Grill Replacement Parts, I love to travel and eat. Especially hamburgers. I am on a quest for the perfect burger.

Admit it — that sounds really cool, doesn’t it?

My quest recently led me to the Windy City.

Chicago may be best know in the food world for deep dish pizza, loaded hot dogs and Charlie Trotter’s Steakhouse. But don’t miss out on these 3 hamburgers.

You’re gonna love these.

1. The BBQ Burger at Marc Burger

If you are a BBQ fan, you might have visited my site The Weekend Grillers. You know that I do not look kindly on “fake BBQ.” Adding sauce does not make it BBQ. True BBQ is a process of smoking and grilling. The sauce is just a bonus.

So to say I ordered the BBQ Burger at Marc Burger with a slightly suspicious attitude would be like saying the buildings in Chicago are a tad tall.

I would be eating my words — if I weren’t busy eating the very last bite of my delicious burger.

This is one fine burger. Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s thick and chunky home-made sauce is a killer. According to the menu it contains coffee, chipotle and harissa among, I’m sure, many other ingredients. It compliments the beef very well, but Marc seals the deal with a couple of strips of some of the best applewood smoked bacon I have ever eaten.

It’s not real BBQ – But for once, I ain’t complaining. Not at all.

Marc Burger is in Macy’s 111 N. State St. (7th Floor) The BBQ Burger is $9

2. Signature Cheeseburger at The Capital Grille

After the BBQ Burger, I wanted just a traditional burger. You don’t get more “traditional” in Chicago than the Capital Grille.

This legendary steakhouse grinds up its top sirloin, adds applewood smoked bacon (love that stuff) and caramelized onions and then charbroils the patty to a perfect doneness before slapping on a thick slice of Havariti. It’s so juicy that it really could use a better bun than the one they chose. But again, I ain’t complaining. The Signature Cheeseburger was everything I wanted.

The Capital Grille is a bit of a chain having restaurants all over the US. The one in Chicago is at 633 N. St. Clair St. The Signature Cheeseburger in Chicago is $15

3. Charburger on Pita at Cross-Rhodes

For my final recommendation, I want to direct you to something just a bit different and a tad outside of downtown.

The Charburger on Pita is, well, exactly what it sounds like. Its a fresh flame-broiled hunk of beef, shoved into a flour pita with feta cheese, lettuce and what can best be described as “Greek-style stir fry.” It’s not really a burger, but it has all of the essence of the best burgers. And it is darn good. Don’t miss this if you are in Evanston.

Cross-Rhodes is at 913 Chicago Ave. in Evanston and the Charburger on Pita goes for a cheap $6.75.
