Lanzarote is a lovely piece of the Canary Islands, the chain’s fourth largest constituent and easternmost point. This Spanish territory formed in the Atlantic Ocean around 35 million years ago as volcanoes breathed fiery life to new land. Lanzarote is home to only two industries; agriculture and tourism. The latter has kept the island alive for over 40 years, so what makes Lanzarote popular with tourists?

Much of the appeal has to do with the wonderful sights to absorb on the island. One such sight is a testament to Lanzarote’s volcanic past known as the Cueva de los Verdes. 3,000 years ago, a volcano erupted, creating a lava stream that flowed over the land. As the flow hardened and sections collapsed, a tube formed a sort of cave from the volcanic rock. Adding to the already natural beauty of the cave are sections containing seawater that has found its way inside. Nestled inside the colorful rock walls is even a concert hall capable of holding about 500 people.

Also adding to Lanzarote’s appeal to tourists is its capital city, Arrecife. Meaning “reef” in Spanish, Arrecife garners its name from the protective rocks lining the sparkling beach located in town. Sunbathers and swimmers alike gaze at the rocky backdrop in a quiet comfort while they enjoy their day at the beach. A visit to the harbor places visitors at the foot of the Gran Hotel Arrecife, which happens to be the tallest building anywhere in the Canary Islands. The awe inspiring Spanish architecture of the churches provides a glimpse of the region’s history and culture. This history is also brilliantly evident in the walls of the Castle of San Gabriel. Off Arrecife’s coast, vacationers will encounter the wondrous and somewhat ominous wreck of a ship that was beached years ago.

Timanfaya National Park is located in the southwestern section of Lanzarote. The park’s active volcano, appropriately name Timanfaya, provided the beautiful park with its name, and the steam geyser that climbs high into the air as a result of the hot ground entertains guests who venture to the park. Dazzling mountain vistas are worthy of more than a few good photographs as are the local plants and animals. Photographs will likely be the extent of your interaction with them, however, because Timanfaya National Park has been designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Visitors are closely regulated, which can add a privileged air to a trip to the park.

Tourists love Lanzarote thanks largely to the scenic vistas the island offers. For more than four decades, it has been the chosen vacation destination for a number of people that only continues to grow year after year.

Europe has so much rich culture and history that sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming choosing where you want to go and what you want to see when you are there. With that in mind, here are some of the most popular destinations for people looking to relax in Europe:

Spain- Spain is home to a variety of beach excursions that not only offer top notch beaches, but do so at a relatively affordable price. The experiences range from the exclusive island beaches of Majorca or Menorca, to the beautiful mainland beach resorts along the Mediterranean Sea.

Portugal – Portugal is home to a range of beach resorts. Whether you are a young couple looking for a place to party or a family looking for friendly activities, The Algarve hosts many miles of beaches that are clean and fun for all. Another well-liked beach area in Portugal is The Azores, which offers an array of activities among its nine various island hotspots.

Cyprus – Anyone looking for the perfect balance on their beach holiday should consider Cyprus as their next destination. The warm blue water and beautiful sand is the perfect setting for an incredible mixture of fabulous cuisine – whether your tastes are for the East or the West. Kyrenia is a breathtaking town on the coast that is a must see for the area.

Greece – The many quaint villages and towns of Greece provide a marvelous backdrop for your romantic get away, and the brilliant white beaches, with their deep blue waters are some of the most beautiful in the world. The ever-present ocean breezes that come off the Mediterranean make the usually hot and humid summer weather very pleasant.

Croatia – Even though the majority of Croatia’s beaches are filled with a variety of rock and pebble, it is still home to a remarkable coastline that draws numerous tourist every year. The National Park Brijuni Islands, Zadar, Sibenik, and Dubrovnik are a few of the admired beach resort towns that Croatia has to offer along the stunning Adriatic Sea.

Turkey – You might not immediately associate Turkey with beaches, but this country has many friendly towns along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts with some of the most beautiful beaches in all of southern Europe. June through October, the weather is mild and the beaches are less crowded though the water is still warm and lovely to swim in. Turkey offers contemporary, well-kept accommodations that are surprisingly affordable while giving you the very best in holiday value.

Nothing beats backpacking in Europe if you get the opportunity. So, you probably want to aware what to pack for Europe.

Packing Your Backpack for Europe

Millions of people head off to Europe on a backpacking trip through a budget travel guide each year. Having done it five times, I can tell you that it will be one of the best times of your life. That being said, you must take some things with you. On the positive side, you don’t need that much.

Europe is not another planet. I mention this because you should keep in mind you can buy everything there if you forget it here. The first time people go backpacking in Europe, they tend to completely overdue it on the packing front. You are not climbing Mount Everest, so don’t overdue it!

The first things to pack are clothes. Depending on where you are going, you may need clothes for warm weather or cold. Assuming it is warm, you need a couple of shirts that are wrinkle resistant. You will buy others there, so don’t pack ten. You also will need a pair of shorts and a bathing suit. If you plan on visiting museums and churches, you will need a pair of long pants to get into many of them. Pack something light that is wrinkle resistant.

For your feet, you can load up on socks because they do not take much space. You will need some sandals and then a pair of something comfortable. Some prefer hiking boots, but I usually went with cross trainers. Whatever you do, make sure you get used to the shoes before heading off. You are going to walk a lot, so blisters from new shoes can be a killer.

On the personal front, you need a brush, toothpaste and any medicinal needs. That is it. You can buy anything else you need as you need it. There is zero point to lugging around shampoo all over Europe. Murphy’s law says it will open in your backpack! Keep it super simple.

While your trip will result in great memories, they will fade in time. Take a camera and, of course, one of our travel journals. The camera should be hardy so it can take the inevitable beating that will occur. Our Nomad travel journals are compact and in a case. They are perfect for trips to Europe because we were on one when we got the idea!

Europeans can read. This means you can buy travel guide info over there. If you plan to visit three or four countries, take the destination travel guide for the FIRST country only. You can pick up the others over there or trade with other backpackers. Guidebooks are heavy and this will save you the aggravation of hauling them everywhere. Also, cybercafes are everywhere, so you do not need to bring a laptop unless you really have a specific need.

Finally, keep copies of your passport and any supporting documentation with you. One set goes in your backpack while another goes in your shorts, money belt or wherever you have space.

Pack light. If you forget something, you can buy it over there. Have a blast!

Whether it’s a scenic beach front, great shopping, the arts, or just lots of fun, Brighton has it. With its mix of sites and attractions, there’s always things to do in Brighton, whatever time of year you visit. Being a seaside town, Brighton’s beach front is, naturally, its main attraction, and it has all kinds of activity (such as sunbathing, surfing, sailing, volleyball and skateboarding) going on. If it’s shopping you want, the area of Brighton called The Lanes offers a mix of cool and unique shops set amongst a maze of quaint, timeless streets.

As every English seaside town should have, Brighton has a pier. Actually, it boasts two piers but one has, unfortunately, been ravaged by storms over the centuries and is now awaiting redevelopment. The pier which survives intact is now known simply as Brighton Pier and with the dodgems, roller-coaster, arcades, cafes and restaurants, it’s a typically-English affair. The pier acts as the focus for fireworks displays during the summer months and these line the beach front with a mass of visitors to enjoy the spectacular displays.

When visiting Brighton, one must pay a visit to The Royal Pavilion. Built for The Prince Regent, the future King George the IV, it was in use by The Royal Family until Victorian times. It boasts an Indian style and reflects other Asian cultures as well, principally Chinese. The building and decoration of The Royal Pavilion was a “no expense spared” project. To appreciate the building in all its splendor, plan a visit to walk around and enjoy it in person on your trip to Brighton.

Brighton hosts many walking tours, as does nearby Hove. If you’d like to expend a little energy and see Brighton by foot, you will be fascinated by the history of the towns and nearby areas. Brighton’s walking tours are guided and you will learn a lot about local history and landmarks from the guides. They can also provide you with information about other places to visit and things to see during your visit. If a walking tour isn’t your thing, there are always Brighton’s wonderful bus tours. A daily ticket will allow you to get on and off and back on the bus as you stop where you will and reboard to see the next site. You will have a chance to make a leisurely day of it, seeing the sights and stopping for tea or lunch along the way. The bus tours take you by all of the major tourist attractions as well as major monuments and landmarks. Consider a bus tour early in your visit to give you an idea of what Brighton is all about!

This has got to be one of the best weekend city breaks around.

It is easy to get to from a wide range of European airports.

This is always a good start as it does away with a long drive to begin your break and it also cuts down costs. Of course some may be coming from much further afield so it is a good idea to do a 2 or 3 centre break.

There are also many European coach tours, which visit all the main cities in Andalucia.

If you are looking for good Europe travel guides it is always best to spend time searching around the Internet and using the online tools to build your own break.

Granada is a spectacular city as it is built around the high point of the Alhambra.

This ancient citadel is the main reason most people initially plan their visit to Granada and it is not a disappointment. It is also much larger than most people realise.

There are a few things to consider when planning your visit to the Alhambra.

The best advice is to buy your tickets on line before you go, as the queues are invariably long and the numbers per session are limited so if you are in the queue and the limit is reached you have queued for nothing.

Also it is quite a climb to reach the entrance as you would expect, but there are buses from the centre of Granada.

It is impossible to describe fully how wonderful the Alhambra is.

It has streets and shops, hotels and a palace besides the pools and gardens it is famous for.
The Generalife gardens are a must see but they are a little way from the centre of the Alcazar.
Some of the more famous areas i.e. the Nazareen Palace will have a timed entrance on your ticket and it is important to stick to this.

Wear comfy shoes, as there is a lot of walking.

There are also night visits, which usually mean you can be there for sunset.

If the Alhambra were the only reason to visit Granada it would be worth going, but as with so may cities they have diverse attractions. For example the Cathedral is spectacular and it is where the tombs are of Ferdinand and Isabella who conquered Granada in 1492. Also, as with many Cathedrals there is plenty of wonderful art and artefacts so allow plenty of time for your visit.

It is an excellent city for walking around, as it is not too big.

There are lots of narrow streets or ‘calles’ with Tapas bars which are an especially good way to start off an evening, which by the way could be a trip to the caves to experience the Flamenco.

How would you like to enjoy Granada calles strolling?

I can’t imagine many answering ‘no’.

The city has so much to offer. You may just visit when the Medieval market is on when the whole of the square in front of the Cathedral looks, for a short while as though it has slipped back 500 years. There are spit roasts, stalls selling crafts brought in by the people who have actually made the jewellery, food etc that they are selling. There are stalls selling toys of the period and a group of musicians playing medieval instruments stroll around the market.

Unless you want to travel outside Granada a weekend is just the right length for a first visit and if you fall ‘under its spell’ you can always return.
